While Salem Asas, provincial police chief of Kabul, confirmed coalition forces were the target of the attack, he said he could not say whether the soldiers suffered any casualties.

The bomber blew up his explosives-packed car near a bus stop on the airport road during the morning rush hour, Asas told DPA.

Witness Ahmad Nejad said several cars were damaged and ambulances had arrived at the scene.

Several suicide bombers targeted Afghan and international forces on the same road last year.

Asas said six civilians were killed while officials from the Public Health Ministry said they had admitted at least 18 wounded civilians for treatment.
