Tamil Rebels Killed in Sri Lanka

Colombo : At least 27 Tamil rebels died and 56 others were wounded in clashes with government troops in different northern Sri Lankan districts, the Defense Ministry reported on Wednesday.

A news release from Colombo located the clashes in the districts of Welioya, Vavuniya and Mannar, at the front between the army and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam (LTTE).

During those operations five soldiers were wounded, one separatist shelter was destroyed and an arsenal was seized, according to the dispatch.

The LTTE have been fighting since July 1983 for the independence of northern and eastern Sri Lanka where the Tamil ethnic group represents the majority.

Over 75,000 people have died during those 25 years of conflict, among them civilians, soldiers and rebels.
