Kuwait Amir dissolves parliament and sets May 17 date for new poll

Kuwait : The Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah on Wednesday dissolved the parliament. Sheikh Sabah approved a decree, saying that in safeguarding the national unity from “phenomena of deviations and violations which took place on the stable constitutional principle … (We have decided) the dissolution of the National Assembly.

This decree is effective from the day of its issue and shall be published in the Gazette.

In line with the decree issued by the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah on Wednesday, a second decree will be issued designating May 17 the day of the parliamentary elections, said Deputy Premier and State Minister for Cabinet Affairs Faisal Al-Hajji Bukadhour.

In a statement, the state minister said that this came in line with the Amiri Decree dissolving the parliament, in line with article 107 of the constitution, as well as article 18 of the election law 35 of the year 1962.

He said the decree would be issued on March 24 and bodies of relevance would be tasked with taking necessary procedures for the parliamentary elections process, thus allowing citizens to exercise their national right with ease.

The state minister prayed that the best interests of the country would continue to be achieved under the sound rule of the Amir and the Crown Prince.
