Damascus : The preliminary Arab Summit meeting of the Social and Economic Council has called on Arab countries to offer aid and support to the Palestinian people to be capable of facing poverty and unemployment problems resulting from the unfair Israeli siege on the Palestinians.
The Council adopted in a final session Wednesday an Arab strategy document for the information and communication technology as well as building a data society till 2012 and giving the issue of developing and enhancing the communication industry a priority.
It also adopted a decision that includes a plan to boost education in the Arab nation, asking the Arab Organisation for Education, Culture and Sciences to coordinate with the Arab League to pursue this issue.
Mervat Tallawi, general coordinator for preparing the Social and Economic Summit to be held in Kuwait next year said in a statement to SANA “there were important decisions for the Arab economy that have been discussed during the council’s meeting and they will be submitted to the Summit.”
She said that Kuwait had taken encouraging steps to prepare for the next year’s Economic Summit including two articles on holding a forum for Arab businessmen and intellectuals as well as establishing an exhibition for the companies’ products.
“An improvement has been made to the inter-Arab trade after the establishment of the Arab free trade zone,” Tallawi said, noting that the improvement reached up to 100 per cent.
She said that the ministers agreed to put specified dates during the next economic summit to reach an agreement on the customs union and the Arab joint market.
