Washington : US president’s envoy to the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Sada Cumber said it is possible to improve the US’s image in the Islamic World.
Cumber told a press conference Wednesday night that by spreading a message of international peace and stability, the US will be able to correct any misperceptions.
Future visits to Islamic countries and the bilateral meetings held with leaders and Islamic organizations in the US and abroad will help deliver this message, he added.
In response to KUNA’s question on the blasphemous cartoons of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) in Denmark, Cumber said “instead of complaining about these cartoons, we have the choice to ignore them, oppose them, or deal with them but in a non-violent manner,” adding that his country denounces these cartoons.
He said his appointment as the US envoy to the OIC aimed at promoting dialogue between the US and the Islamic World in light of the US commitments towards Islamic countries and to achieve peace and stability for all nations in the region.
He said he will go on a tour next week that takes him to five Islamic countries; Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Senegal, and Morocco, adding that he is also looking forward to visit Kuwait in near future, having received a personal invitation from the Kuwait foreign minister.
Bush announced that he would send a special envoy to the OIC in June 2007, when he attended the 50th anniversary ceremony of the Islamic Center, a mosque and cultural center in Washington DC.
Cumber is his country’s first representative among those of 57 nations at the second-largest international organization, which advocates Islamic values in both social and political realms.
