New Delhi : The Delhi High Court Thursday asked the government why the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) should not be asked to pay compensation to accident victims.
A division bench of Justices Mukul Mudgal and Reva Khetrapal asked the Delhi government to file its reply by April 8.
Kailash Vasudev, amicus curiae, told the court that if privately run Blueline buses are to pay compensation to the accident victims, the same should imply to DTC buses too.
Vasudev also urged the court to pay some compensation to accident victims’ families from the funds already deposited by Blueline bus owners.
The high court had last year assumed the power to release impounded buses involved in road accidents. The court had then fixed a compensation amount to be awarded to victims if the owners wanted their buses to be released.
The Blueline buses in the capital have claimed 18 lives this year. Last year these “killer” buses had claimed 120 lives on Delhi’s lawless roads.
