United Nations : United Nations head Ban Ki-Moon is aware and generally supportive of an idea to involve a range of current leaders and former heads of state in attempts to move forward the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, the United Nations said Thursday.
“He is certainly aware of it and supports all efforts towards that goal,” Ban’s spokeswoman Michele Montas said.
The proposal involves a group known as The Elders – a group of leaders focused on mediating conflicts globally. The group, started by British billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson, would seek to involve leaders including former U.S. president Jimmy Carter, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu and former Irish president Mary Robinson in Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, according to media reports.
“This group can speak freely and boldly, working both publicly and behind the scenes on whatever actions need to be taken. Together we will work to support courage where there is fear, foster agreement where there is conflict, and inspire hope where there is despair,” states The Elders’ website.
