Election panel reviews preparations in Karnataka

Bangalore : Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswamy, along with Election Commissioners S.Y. Qureshi and Navin Chawla, Friday met representatives of political parties, district electoral officers and police officials here and reviewed the preparations for Karnataka assembly polls being held next month.

Gopalaswamy, Qureshi and Chawla arrived here on a two-day visit to assess arrangements for the three-phase poll May 10, 16 and 22 to elect the 224-member assembly. Counting is to be held May 25.

State chief electoral officer M.N. Vidyashankar was present during the meetings.

A spokesperson of the state election office said the discussions focused on security, the possible effect of peak summer on voter turnout, particularly in north Karnataka, and shortcomings in the voters list.

Gopalaswamy and the election commissioners will Saturday meet state chief secretary Sudhakar Rao and Director General of Police K.R. Sreenivasan and address a press meet before returning to Delhi.
