New Delhi : Even as the industry is looking for opportunities in the defence sector in view of the policy reforms, the Indian Army has shown preference for indigenous technology for its battlefield management system, Vice Chief of Army Lt. Gen. M.L. Naidu said Tuesday.
“The battlefield depends on the information systems as much as on the weapon systems. It is important that the army procures cutting edge technology available indigenously to create a win-win situation for both the armed forces and the Indian industry,” Naidu said here at a seminar on Battlefield Management System (BMS).
The Directorate of General Information Systems, the Indian Army and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) organized the first international seminar.
In the modern-day network-centric warfare, the Indian Army is looking towards a Battlefield Management System that will be an effective tool for quick and correct decision-making and will suit its specific needs.
“Battlefield commanders can benefit from real-time accurate information, enabling them to make the right decisions at the right times. Commanders must have a constant supply of relevant and timely information. The information include maps, terrain, weather and just about anything else,” said Naidu.
“Challenges of warfare are varied and will keep changing in coming years. We have to ensure that the army is up to date,” said Director General of Information Systems (Army) Lt. Gen. Avadesh Prakash.
The two-day seminar was attended by representatives of the army, Indian industry as well as by international delegates from several countries.
“The policy reforms that are taking place in the defence sector are very encouraging and the industry should treat this enormous opportunity as a test case to prove that it can develop projects to meet the real time requirements of the armed forces,” CEO of HCL Infosystems Ltd Ajai Chowdhry said.
