Malaysia`s Islamic party chief in hospital after mild stroke

Kuala Lumpur : The leader of Malaysia`s opposition Pan Islamic Party Abdul Hadi Awang was admitted to hospital Thursday after suffering a mild stroke.

Party Secretary General Kamaruddin Jaffar said in a statement Hadi himself informed the PAS office that his condition “is not worrisome” and that doctors advised him to rest fully.

Hadi, 60, is at a hospital in his home state Terengganu. His eldest son Muhammad Khalil told the official news agency Bernama that his father had a mild stroke but his condition was stable.

Hadi had just led PAS in a victorious campaign during the March 8 election, increasing their parliamentary representation to 23 from only 6 after the 2004 general election.

PAS, together with its two partners in the People`s Alliance — the Democratic Action Party and the People`s Justice Party — won a 82 seats out of 222 in the lower house of Parliament.

The opposition coalition also won control of five states out of 13 in the state level elections.

Hadi won both the Marang parliamentary seat and the Ru Rendang state assembly seat.
