Vishakhapatnam : As part of its 15-year programme to achieve 85 percent indigenisation of hardware, the Indian Navy ordered over 30 ships from the country’s shipyards, a senior officer said Tuesday.
“The (Indian defence) industry should rise to the occasion and forge a synergetic and symbiotic relationship with the navy, thus building on each other’s strengths,” Vice Admiral Raman P. Suthan, who heads the Vishakhapatnam-based Eastern Naval Command, said.
He was speaking at a seminar-cum-exhibition at the Naval Dockyard here.
As part of its 15-year programme, the navy is in “extensive interaction” with the Confederation of Indian Industries and the Organisation of Small Scale Industries, Suthan added.
During the seminar, which is in its fifth year, papers from the Indian Navy and Indian industry will be presented on themes such as “Indigenisation – Policies and Procedures”, “Logistic Chain Management for Indigenised items”, “Indigenisation – Specifications and Quality Assurance” and “Indigenisation – the Industry Perspective”.
The exhibition provides the Indian industry an opportunity to showcase its products, and at the same time enables it to appreciate the requirements of the Indian Navy, a defence ministry statement said.
