The MoD said the incident happened on Monday, when a suspected minestrike hit a vehicle providing security to a resupply convoy on the return to the UK’s forward operation base at Camp Bastion in Helmand province.

On April 13, two senior aircraft men were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in was caught in a roadside explosion in Kandahar province.

A lieutenant and a marine also died from an IED on March 30, when the vehicle they were travelling in was caught in an explosion in the vicinity of Kajaki, Helmand province.

The spate of killings, which follow a further three British soldiers being killed in explosions this year, comes after the Taliban have shifted tactics from open confrontation and gunfights with better equipped British and other Nato troops.

The latest deaths bring the number of British military fatalities in Afghanistan, since the start of operations in November 2001, to 94.

All but seven have been killed since 2006 when the UK become involved in combat operations in southern Afghanistan.
