Iranian FM rebuffs accusations Iran is backing armed groups in Iraq

Kuwait : Iranian Foreign Minister Manuchehr Motaki has rebuffed accusations that his country was backing armed groups in Iraq, saying that foreign troops were to be blamed for that.

Motaki, who headed his country’s delegation to the Third Expanded Conference of Neighbouring Countries of Iraq, which concluded here earlier Tuesday, told a press conference that despite the failure of foreign troops in Iraq, they insist on carrying on with this failed policy, and blame others when confronted with this fact.

Tehran is one of the most honest and serious countries with regards to providing support to push forward the political process in Iraq and its legitimate government led by Premier Nouri Al-Maliki.

Regarding Iran’s controversial nuclear dossier, Mottaki pointed out that Iran would continue practising its legitimate and national right of acquiring peaceful nuclear power.

As for the Iraqi issue, Motaki said that US policies in the war-torn country had so far “failed.”

He revealed that his meeting with his Saudi counterpart, Prince Saud Al-Faisal, tackled a number of issues of common interest. In this regard, Motaki called for Iranian-Saudi ties to be developed.

Motaki said that there was no chance to discuss the issue of the Al-Durra oil field with his Kuwaiti counterpart, Sheikh Dr Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah.

The Iranian foreign minister praised the Kuwait conference in general and commended speeches delivered in the opening and the closed-door sessions, hoping that ideas presented during the sessions would contribute to bouying the security status in Iraq.
