New Delhi : Three women and a man have been arrested for allegedly trying to sell a female infant in the capital, police said Thursday.
Police said a woman named Jyoti, involved in selling infants earlier, was trying to sell a three-day-old baby in central Delhi.
“A trap was laid and a decoy customer was sent to strike a deal. Two women were immediately arrested from the Bengali Market Wednesday and the baby was recovered from them,” said a police official.
“During investigation, two more people – a male and a female – were also arrested on the same charges. They revealed they have been selling children for the past some years in Delhi, Rajasthan and Punjab,” the official added.
Police said Jyoti was the mastermind behind the racket.
Jyoti in her interrogation said she used to look out for pregnant maidservants and other women, who were not prepared to raise the child. Jyoti used to win their confidence and after the birth sold the infants to childless couples.
