Jaipur : A committee formed by the Rajasthan government to look into the Gujjars' demand for tribal status Wednesday invited representations from the community as well as others by July 16.
The committee, headed by retired judge of the Rajasthan high court Jasraj Chopra, is to submit its report in three months.
In a mahapanchayat, or mass meet, held in Pushkar Sunday, Gujjar community leaders had announced that they would soon make a strong presentation of their case before the committee.
The committee was formed after protesting Gujjars and the state government reached an agreement on June 4.
The Gujjars, currently classified as other backward class (OBC), had held violent protests in Rajasthan and some neighbouring states during May 29-June 4, demanding tribal status with an eye on better job and educational opportunities. At least 26 people were killed and hundreds injured in the violence.
Apart from Chopra, the panel includes Professor Yogesh Atal, a sociologist of international standing, as member and T. Srinivasan, a senior bureaucrat as secretary.
