Malappuram (Kerala) : The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), one of the main constituents in the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala, has said it is not getting a fair treatment in the alliance.
“Considering the strength of IUML in Kerala we are not getting what we deserve. Our candidates are not getting the kind of support that we give to other candidates in the coalition,” IUML state general secretary P.K. Kunhalikutty told a local news channel Saturday.
“We are taking this seriously as many of our candidates lost in the last assembly elections.”
Kunhalikutty said the party will continue to work for the victory of UDF candidates but from the next election it would be strictly on a reciprocal basis.
He said the IUML expected other UDF partners to work wholeheartedly for the victory of its candidates in Malappuram district, an IUML stronghold where the state’s ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) has made serious inroads in recent years.
Malappuram has been witnessing dissension in the UDF, with senior Congress leader Aryadan Muhammed criticising the IUML. It was this criticism that seems to have prompted Kunhalikutty’s remarks.
Responding to Kunhalikutty’s comments, UDF convenor and Congress leader P.P. Thankachan said his party had no problems with the IUML.
“There is a problem between Aryadan Muhammed and IUML. This will be settled in the first week of June,” he told newspersons in Alappuzha, 60 km south of Kochi.
