Hamburg : Real Madrid team-mates Arjen Robben and Wesley Snijder provided the goals as the Netherlands beat Wales 2-0 in an emotional final tune-up match for Euro 2008.
The match Sunday marked the last international game on home ground for goalkeeper veteran Edwin van der Sar, who retires from the national team after Euro, and for coach Marco van Basten, who then moves on to train Ajax Amsterdam.
The Dutch were the only of Euro finalists in action on the day to win. Holders Greece were held 0-0 by Armenia, Poland drew 1-1 with Denmark and Sweden were beaten 1-0 by Ukraine.
Van der Sar kept a clean sheet in his 125th cap as van Basten fielded the team which will also likely start the first Euro match on June 9 against world champions Italy.
The two-time Euro champions France and Romania are the Dutch’s other group opponents at the June 7-29 Euro in Austria and Switzerland.
Robben and Snijder wasted early chances against Wales before Robben broke the deadlock in the 34th after stealing the ball in midfield.
Snijder wrapped up matters with a curling 25m free-kick nine minutes into the second half for the 1988 Euro champions.
The Netherlands wasted a host of chances for a much bigger win, with second-half substitute Dirk Kuyt from Liverpool creating lots of danger.
While the Dutch were cheered, Sweden were jeered after their final test in Solna went wrong in the form of a 1-0 defeat against non-qualifiers Ukraine from Serhiy Nazarenko’s winner six minutes from time.
Lars Lagerback’s team was sloppy in defence and harmless in the attack in the final match before its group D Euro encounters against Greece, Spain and Russia.
But the Greeks, Sweden’s first Euro opponent on June 10, were also not much better off in their goalless draw with Armenia in Offenbach, Germany, a week after Otto Rehhagel’s team lost 3-2 in Hungary.
Greece looked shaky in defence while up front Euro 2004 hero Angelos Charisteas failed to hit the empty net from a tight angle in the 36th minute.
Poland also drew, 1-1 with Denmark, in Chorzow one week ahead of its tricky Euro opener against record champion Germany, with Austria and Croatia the other opponents in group B.
Martin Vingaard opened the scoring for the not qualified 1992 champion Denmark midway through the first half.
Maciej Zurawski saw his weak penalty saved by Danish goalkeeper Thomas Sörensen in the 36th but Jacek Krzynowek reconciled the fans with a 42nd-minute equalizer on Poland’s best attacking move.
