Woman, several militants killed in Taliban operation

By KUNA,

Kabul : An Afghan woman and “several Taliban militants” were killed in an operation by the US-led coalition troops in southeastern Afghanistan, the military said on Friday. The anti-insurgent operation was conducted in Zurmat district of Paktia province on Thursday night, said a statement released from the coalition forces’ Bagram base. While searching compounds in Zurmat district to target two militant leaders, the coalition forces received fire from armed militants, said the statement.

“The force responded with small-arms fire and air strikes, killing several militants and a woman who was located with the attacking militants in the building,” it added. This is the second incident of civilian casualties in operation by coalition troops in the southeastern zone.

Three days back, the coalition forces admitted the killing of four civilians, three of them women and a boy, in such an operation in Mata Khan district of the neighbouring province of Paktika.

The coalition troops said several militants were killed in the operation. However, an Afghan legislator and locals from Paktika province said all those killed in the coalition forces operation were civilians.
