Kabul : A roadside mine planted by unknown persons near a government building in Marja district, Helmand province of southern Afghanistan, exploded, leaving district police chief dead and district chief wounded, an official said Sunday.
Both the officials were going to wash hands at a nearby stream when they were struck by the mine Saturday evening, resulting in death of district police chief Haji Torjan and injury of district chief Juma Gul, Helmand’s police chief Mohammad Hussein Andiwal told Xinhua.
Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi has taken the responsibility for the incident.
Taliban-led anti-government elements have intensified their attacks on Afghan government targets and local-based international forces during the past three weeks.
