Bhopal : People affected by the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP) on the Narmada river will be put up in 26 camps in Madhya Pradesh during the monsoon season when the catchment area is expected to be flooded, officials said Monday.
As many as 143 villages spread over Alirajpur, Dhar, Barwani and Khargone districts would be affected by the monsoon.
“Families residing in these villages have accepted rehabilitation facilities, but have not vacated the area, necessitating emergency help during the monsoon,” said Narmada Valley Development Authority (NVDA) vice chairman Pradeep Bhargava.
“All basic facilities including food and drinking water would be made available in the camps – two of them in Alirajpur, 10 in Dhar, 13 in Barwani and one in Khargone district,” he said.
The monsoon contingency plans, at a cost of Rs.35 million, would be implemented under the guidance of district collectors who have been authorized to make necessary arrangements, he added.
The collectors would arrange for motor boats, home guards, medicines, drinking water, electricity, food and transportation.
Contingency plans would also be implemented in the areas affected by other dam projects on the river including Indira Sagar, Omkareshwar, Maan, Jobat and Upper Veda projects, he said.
A series of small dams and more than 30 mega dams have been planned on the river in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.
