Cairo : A special Arab commission tasked with following up on Israel’s nuclear programme has commenced a three-day meeting here.
The committee, an offshoot of the Arab League Council, will discuss various topics including follow-up on Arab coordination at the regular session of the 52nd conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency due in Vienna in September, revision of the implementation of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT) and prospected impact of Israeli satellite programmes on Arab security, as well as ridding the Middle East of weapons of mass destruction.
Director of the Arab Atomic Energy Authority Mahmoud Nasser Eddine said in a statement Sunday that the delegates were briefed on efforts of the Arab League General Secretariat vis-a-vis the scheduled topics.
The commission, said, has followed up on Israel’s acts breaching the NPT, and warned of a prospected agreement between Israel and India for nuclear cooperation.
The Arabs should pursue efforts to pressure Israel, India and Pakistan to sign the NPT, he added.
