Cairo : The Interim Arab Parliament (IAP) on Saturday called on the Lebanese people to settle political disputes through dialogue to avoid further deterioration of security situation in the country.
The IAP made the appeal during its extraordinary session held here Saturday to deal with joint Arab action and the need to settle inter-Arab differences, the Egyptian official MENA news agency reported.
Hailing efforts made by Qatar, Syria and the Cairo-based Arab League, the IAP warned of the failure of the Doha agreement aiming at ending Lebanon’s political standoff.
Failing to implement the Doha deal would have negative impact on the Lebanese national security and the Arab world, said the IAP.
Lebanon’s ruling majority and the opposition reached an agreement in Doha on May 21, ending a 18-month-long political deadlock which has pushed the country to the brink of a civil war.
The first phase of the agreement led to the election of army chief Michel Suleiman as the new president on May 25 after six months of a presidential vacuum.
The second step is to form a national unity government giving the opposition the long-awaited veto power, but creation of the cabinet has been delayed due to disagreement over key portfolios since late May.
Meanwhile, deadly clashes earlier this week between pro- and anti-government supporters in northern Lebanon, leaving 10 people dead and 55 others wounded, are further threatening the country’s national unity and security.
