New Delhi : With the threat perception in the capital rising, Delhi Police have asked residents to get their tenants verified or else they could be booked under the law, which prescribes a fine or a jail term up to six months.
“After every 90 days we issue a notice requesting public to get their tenants verified. In the latest circular released a couple of days ago, we have again requested the same,” said Delhi Police spokesman Rajan Bhagat.
“Action can be taken against them (those who fail to report their tenants to the police) under section 144 of CrPC (Criminal Procedure Code) clubbed with section 188 of the IPC (Indian Penal Code) that suggests fine and a maximum imprisonment of six months,” Bhagat said.
The deputy commissioners of 10 police districts in the capital have been asked to launch a fresh drive in this regard.
At least 300 landlords were fined last year for failing to verify their tenants.
Delhi Police, however, say there was no data of tenants living in the city, which has a population of nearly 16 million.
Bhagat said this move would be clubbed with the ongoing door-to-door servant verification drive.
“The servant verification drive was launched May 12. It was found that in 400,000 houses there were 60,000 domestic helps and out of which only 26,000 were verified,” he said.
