The minister discussed Sunday with the UN Special Coordinator for the peace process in the Middle East Robert Serry the latest developments in the Middle East and the efforts exerted to launch the peace process.

He called the UN to practise its important role in a neutral and balanced manner to keep its credibility.

Serry, for his part, expressed optimism over the latest positive developments in the region, referring to the indirect peace talks between Syria and Israel under Turkish mediation and the truce deal between Hamas and Israel.

Deputy Foreign Minister Fayssal al-Mikdad attended the meeting.

“Talks with the Syrian officials dealt with the latest developments in the region and the Doha agreement in addition to the indirect peace negotiations between Syria and Israel under Turkish mediation,” Serry said in a statement to SANA following the meeting.

The UN official added his talks also dealt with the latest developments in Palestine and the truce between the Palestinians and Israel.

He reiterated the UN support to achieve a just and comprehensive peace in the region and its aspiration for developing cooperation with Syria.
