On 10th January 1993 there was a cultural programme going on in M.L.School in Malad. A state minister was present at the programme in the capacity of the Chief Guest. The two members of Shiv Sena, Ashok Patel and Madhukar Rawat, were enraged by the participation of the minister in the programme at a Muslim school. They went near the main gate of the school and started brick batting and chanting inflammatory slogans.

The police arrested 16 people in this connection but the court acquitted 14 of them for lack of sufficient evidence. But it pronounced Ashok Patel and Madhukar Rawat guilty under the charge of illegal gathering and the attempt to create communal riots.
