Jerusalem police chief Ilan Franko said the rampage was a deliberate attack.

The driver, also killed when overpowered and shot, was believed to be a Palestinian from East Jerusalem known to the police.

Witnesses said they saw the body of at least one dead woman who was trapped in her vehicle when the bulldozer driver deliberately rammed the shovel into her windshield.

Two more people were also killed, witnesses said.

Two policemen climbed onto the bulldozer and struggled with the driver, but failed to immediately overpower him. He was shot dead.

An Israel Radio correspondent who saw the incident said he saw the bulldozer first advance on a truck and then on a private vehicle. He said the driver appeared young, calm and focused.

The identity of the driver was not immediately known.

At least two of the injured were said to be in critical condition.

The incident took place near the construction site for Jerusalem’s proposed light railway.
