The responsibility for the attack Wednesday was announced in a statement circulated here and bore the signature of “Hebron Liberals — The group of Imad Moghneia”.

A Palestinian ploughed his bulldozer into an Israeli bus, vehicles and pedestrians in one of Jerusalem’s busy street. Israeli police shot dead the driver.

Israeli police said the driver had a high record of criminal acts and an investigation is underway.

The Imad Moghneia group announced responsibility for several previous attacks in recent months, last of which was an attack against a radical Jewish institution in Jerusalem in which several students were either killed or injured.

Meanwhile, Sami Abu Zuhri, spokesman for the Islamic Hamas movement which controls the Gaza Strip, said his movement had no information about the reasons that motivated the Palestinian bulldozer driver to hit cars and bus in Jerusalem.

Abu Zuhri, however, said that if the attack was politically motivated, “then it will be a natural result of the continuation of the Israeli aggression against our people in West Bank and Gaza Strip.”

Hamas and Israel have been in a state of ceasefire in the Gaza Strip since June 19.

According to the Egyptian-brokered deal, Israel stops its attacks in the Hamas-controlled territory and has also to ease the siege it imposes on Gaza, while Palestinians halt rocket attacks against Israeli communities near Gaza.

On its part, the Islamic Jihad (Holy War), a small Palestinian faction in Gaza, welcomed the attack, saying it was a natural response to Israeli military actions. “The enemy has to expect more attacks if it kept the occupation and the aggression against our land and people,” the movement said in a statement.
