Beijing : Police shot and killed five criminal suspects for violently resisting arrest in northwestern Xinjiang autonomous region on Tuesday, state media said. Two other suspects were injured and were hospitalized, while eight others were detained.
Police opened fire after an officer was stabbed by a suspect from the group, which they were trying to arrest, Xinhua news agency quoted the Urumqi public security bureau as saying. The sources said three of the suspects armed with knives broke into a beauty saloon, and injured its owner.
China has accused separatist forces linked to the East Turkestan Islamic Movment, of trying to sabotage the Beijing Olympic Games and said it foiled an attempt in early March to blow up a passenger airplane which was flying from Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, to Beijing.
China aviation authorities announced that from July 20, passengers and visitors to all airports in Xinjiang, Tibet, cities co-hosting Olympic competitions and neighbouring airports would be screened before entering the terminals.
