Gaza : Islamic Hamas movement on Wednesday said it only respects a comprehensive national dialogue to end the state of political split in the Palestinian territories.
Hamas’ reaction was made following a string of statements by various Palestinian officials about the necessity to resume the dialogue in order to make reconciliation between Hamas and President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement.
“We are interested in a comprehensive dialogue in which we agree on a number of principles and discuss every issue according to its priority,” Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoom told reporters. “We will respect and abide by anything that was agreed upon.”
While Palestinian sources said Wednesday that Abbas wants to form a transitional government with Hamas first to pave the way for early elections and reform the security forces, which aims at ending the political loyalties to Hamas or Fatah among the security services.
In June 2007, Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip by force after routing pro-Abbas forces and ousted his Fatah movement, while Abbas formed a Western-backed government in the West Bank.
But Hamas rejected Abbas’ proposal. “These are selected issues contradict with the principle of dialogue’s thoroughness,” Barhoom said. “All the controversial issues must be resolved together in order to avoid differences in the future.”
Meanwhile, Qais Abdel Karim, an official from the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), criticized Hamas for “demanding a two-way dialogue with Fatah” without the other factions in the talks.
“This is a problem that obstructs the way of the dialogue,” Abdel Karim said.
Barhoom said though Hamas was interested in expanding the dialogue to include all the factions, “there are some particular issues of differences involve only Hamas and Fatah.”
