Raipur : India’s worst Maoist insurgency hit state Chhattisgarh witnessed 1,093 killings, including of 726 civilians, since 2004, Home Minister Ram Vichar Netam informed the state assembly Friday.
In a written reply to a question by Mahendra Karma, Congress legislator and leader of the opposition, Netam informed that the state witnessed 2,784 incidents of Maoist violence between Jan 1, 2004, and June 20, 2008.
He said that 726 civilians were killed apart from 243 police personnel and 124 special police officers (SPOs).
More than 90 percent incidents and casualties were reported from the state’s southern vast hilly Bastar region that comprises five districts – Dantewada, Bijapur, Narayanpur, Kanker and Bastar – spread out in about 40,000 sq km area.
This year, till June 20, the state recorded 317 incidents of Maoist violence with Bijapur topping with 84 incidents followed by Dantewada and Narayanpur with 66 incidents and Kanker with 65 cases. Raipur district has three incidents.
The state witnessed the highest ever Maoist incidents in year 2006 with 812 Maoist incidents, he said.
