‘Govt flouted rules by according minority status to school’

By NNN-PTI,

New Delhi : Despite a clear guideline that a school can be declared minority only by the National Commission for Minorities, the Delhi government has accorded such status to several academic institutions in violation of the existing rules, an activist has alleged.

Activist Gurvinder Singh Saini said that through an RTI application, he learned that Guru Harkishan Public Schools in capital’s Tilak Nagar and Hari Nagar were declared as minority institutes by the Director of Education.

In reply to a separate RTI, the Delhi government, however, said its education department “does not issue certificate of minority to any institute. The school has to apply to the National Commission for Minorities for this.” Deputy Director of Education, North-West(Delhi) Upendra Singh in his reply said Sri Guru Nanak Public School, Adarsh Nagar, was an unaided minority school as per the certificate issued by the Director of Education.

“This is illegal. On one hand they should not issue such a certificate and on the other they are openly doing it,” Saini said.
