Dhaka : Bangladeshi former foreign secretary and former ambassador to China Farooq Sobhan said here Sunday that China has made great efforts in preparing for the upcoming Olympics and he believed the Beijing Olympics will be a success.
Farooq said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua that he was deeply impressed by the construction of the venues when he last visited some Olympic venues including Bird’s Nest in August 2007 at the invitation of Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs.
Farooq said he was very impressed by the preparation for the Olympics by the Chinese government and the Chinese people.
Farooq was Bangladeshi ambassador to China from August 1987 to October 1991. During his tenure as ambassador to China, he attended the opening and closing ceremonies of Beijing Asian Games.
Farooq said Beijing Asian Games was quite successful. “With the best preparation, the Beijing Olympics will be more successful,” he said.
While talking about the performance of Bangladeshi team in Beijing Asian Games, Farooq said Bangladesh still lacks professional training. “For a country like Bangladesh, participation is more important,” he said.
Bangladesh will send 6 sportsmen and women to contest the Beijing Olympics and Farooq hoped that they can reap good results and Bangladesh’s sports level will improve through the Olympics.
Farooq said Bangladesh was one of the first countries to support China for its applying for hosting the Olympics. As a former Bangladeshi ambassador to China, he was very excited when China was awarded the chance to host the 2008 Olympics.
Farooq said he regrets for not having an opportunity to go to China to see the Olympics.
