“The enemies overran Ajiristan district late last night,” police officer Ghani Khan said.

One police personnel was killed and two were injured in the rebel attack, he added.

The officer attributed the rebels’ success in overrunning the district to small size of the police force in the district and poor equipment.

The government would soon send reinforcements to retake the far-flung and mountainous district, he said.

Earlier in July, Osman Osmani, the governor of Ghazni province, had warned that Taliban fighters have gathered in Ghazni and were trying to use the province as the frontline to mount pressure on the Afghan capital.

Militia loyal to Taliban had massed hundreds of fighters in Arghandab district of the southern Kandahar province last month but government troops with the support of NATO smashed them and restored law and order there.
