The latest death takes the number of British military casualties in the country since 2001 to 111. All but seven have been killed since UK troops were first deployed in Helmand two years ago.

The MoD said that two other soldiers were also injured in the latest incident in which a patrol was hit with roadside bombs during a battle against Taliban insurgents in the Kajaki area of Helmand.

The British death is the first this month but comes after 13 were killed in southern Afghanistan in June, the second highest monthly toll.

June’s total was only surpassed in September 2006, when 14 UK soldiers died in a Nimrod MR2 surveillance plane crash near Kandahar after bursting into flames in mid-air.
