Cairo : The League of Arab States has announced an agreement with Sudan over a package of measures to help solve the Darfur crisis.
A league statement Wednesday said Secretary-General Amr Moussa and Sudanese officials agreed on steps and measures of political and legal nature to address the different dimensions of the Darfur crisis in cooperation and coordination with the UN and the African Union.
The package, it said, stresses Sudanese legislative and judicial integrity. Stress was also put on political reconciliation and re-establishment of rule of law and order among all Sudanese groups.
There was also a call to support the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) and bolster cooperation between Sudan and the two organisations to provide humanitarian aid and distribute it in Darfur.
The agreement also indicated Sudan is to look into all acts considered illegal against the people of Darfur and to make sure crimes covered by international law are also covered by the Sudanese constitution.
Fair trials and special tribunals for Darfur crimes were also indicated, as well as the right of all to file suit and take legal action over any breach of rights. There was also allowance for local tribal and African law to be used to settle disputes, within the overall framework of law.
The League also stated a request would be submitted to the Security Council to halt measures taken within the framework of resolution 1593 as Sudan, the AU, and the League address the Darfur issue.
The statement pointed out to a visit by the League’s secretary-general to Sudan on July 20-21, in implementing the resolutions of the Arab foreign ministers’ emergency meeting on July 19.
Sudan called for the exmergency meeting after an arrest warrant against President Al-Bashir was issued by the International Criminal Court citing charges of war crimes in Darfur.
