People saw the cracks on a small area Sunday near Balanga river bank within the municipality area of Balasore town, some 200 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.

A house was damaged due the cracks, one of which is about two feet wide and more than 10 feet deep, eyewitnesses said.

“Over the past three days, the cracks have spread to about a kilometre area,” additional district magistrate Sribatsa Kumar Jena told IANS.

“We moved three families to safer places,” he said.

The administration has sought the help of scientists of the state geology department to ascertain the reasons that caused these cracks.
