Bush and Gilani managed to strengthen the alliance between both nations, damaged after Washington threatened to burst into Pakistani territory to fight rebel groups in the Afghan border.

The meeting took place as rebel groups intensify their presence in the western Pakistani border with Afghanistan.

Gilani, on his first official visit to Washington since he took up office in March 2008, said that Afghan rebel forces are a common enemy to the United States and his country.

Pakistan has received more than $9.6 billion to strengthen this alliance since the United States invaded Afghanistan with the pretext of fighting terrorism in 2001.
