Damascus : The meeting between President Bashar al-Assad and a delegation headed by Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council Amar Abdul Aziz AL-Hakim here concentrated on bilateral relations between the two brotherly countries and means of bolstering them in all fields.
Al-Hakim briefed al-Assad at the meeting Wednesday on the latest developments in Iraq and the president stressed Syria’s support to the ongoing political process in Iraq and the necessity of achieving national reconciliation among the Iraqi parties whereby Iraq’s sovereignty, security and stability are maintained.
Al-Hakim said he highly appreciated Syria’s support for the Iraqi government and people and for hosting displaced Iraqis.
Vice President Farouk al-Shara later received al-Hakim and his delegation in the presence of Assistant Vice President Mohammad Nasif.
In a press conference following the meeting, Al-Hakim described his meeting with al-Assad as frank and transparent during which discussions dealt with the basic files on Iraq.
“There was great understanding and political will from President al-Assad to boost bilateral relations between the two countries which are linked by historic and geographic ties and common interests in the political, economic, security and cultural domains,” al-Hakim said.
“Syria, in its capacity as the current head of the Arab summit, assumes responsibility over the Arab files in various manner, and this makes her capable of playing a positive role in boosting ties between Iraq and the Arab states,” he added.
On the condition of Iraqi refugees in Syria, al-Hakim expressed his country’s appreciation for Syria’s leadership and people for hosting the huge number of refugees and bearing the burden of supplying them with basic needs.
“Iraq is an Arab country and we are proud of our Arab identity… so communication with the Arab states is a necessity for Iraq and the world,” al-Hakim said.
