New York : Despite the sorry state of the slumping US currency, next month’s US Open will feature a million-dollar prize money increase to $19.6 million in total.

By contrast, Wimbledon paid out $22.5 million when the strong British pound was converted to dollars.

But the summer US hardcourt series, which starts next week in Los Angeles, could boost the New York total to nearly the London figure, thanks to extra payouts from the six-week-long run-up series.

Winners on the men’s and women’s sides of the series each earn another million at the Grand Slam starting August 27.

Men’s and women’s singles winners in New York will claim $1.4 million dollars each, level with the Wimbledon cheques cut last weekend to Serena Williams and Roger Federer.

“Today’s players are some of the most talented, competitive, and hard working athletes in sports,” said US Tennis Association (USTA) chairman Arlen Kantarian.

“The increased prize money and upgraded player facilities reflect the tremendous excitement and entertainment they bring to the US Open.”

The event has also improved facilities at Flushing Meadows, renovating the player area with a new lounge, locker rooms and fitness centre at a total cost of $7.5 million.
