Gaza : The Islamic Hamas movement on Monday said it rejected the idea of sending multinational forces to the Palestinian territories.
“Hamas completely rejects the entry of any foreign or Arab forces to West Bank or Gaza Strip under any pretext,” Hamas said in a statement, which also called for withdrawal of the Israeli forces from the occupied Palestinian territories without any condition.
The statement was issued following reports that the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) was mulling to declare the Hamas-controlled Gaza a rebel region and to ask the United Nations to deploy its forces there.
Hamas said the only way out of the internal Palestinian crisis was “the direct and serious dialogue with Hamas rather than demand of foreign forces.”
Hamas took over the coastal strip in June last year following deadly fighting against the long-dominant Fatah movement, headed by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
After suffering a fiasco in Gaza, Abbas consolidated his power in the West Bank. Hamas has been since then ruling the Gaza Strip, evoking political separation between the two territories which are geographically divided.
