“We must let petty differences be subordinated to higher values of life and strive together for making Pakistan a truly modern, dynamic, progressive and democratic Islamic state in accordance with the ideals of our founder,” said President Pervez Musharraf in his message to the nation.

He said the objectives of the creation of Pakistan could not be achieved unless the evils of terrorism, extremism and intolerance were eradicated and socio-economic justice was established in the country.

Prime Minster Yousuf Raza Gilani asked the nation to support the ongoing war on terrorism and extremism for the survival of Pakistan, saying, “We will fight this war to ensure the writ of the government.” He expressed the confidence that a nation with a sense of honour and love for the motherland would spare no effort to protect national interests.

The premier said that his coalition government was “committed to bringing relief to the common man, steer Pakistan out of the current political, economic situation and make it a developed, progressive, self-reliant democratic Islamic welfare state.”
