New Delhi : About 50 people, mainly from slum clusters in Delhi along the Yamuna, were evacuated Tuesday as the river Tuesday continued to flow above the danger mark for the third consecutive day.
People from low-lying areas in Usmanpur, Nigambodh Ghat, Sonia Vihar, Chilla village, Batla House and Garhi Mandu were moved to safety even as scores of families continued to face problems with their food and drinking water supply blocked.
The Yamuna was Tuesday flowing at 205.69 metres, three feet above the danger mark for the capital. People were living in temporary tents but food and drinking water still remained a worry for all of them.
Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta held a meeting with senior government functionaries of the flood control department to take a stock of the situation.
“We are hopeful that the flood situation will improve soon. We are holding a meeting on flood problem,” Mehta told IANS.
Private electricity distribution company BSES Tuesday went from camp to camp and distributed over 10,000 food packets to these people whose houses have been inundated due to rising water levels seen almost after a gap of six years.
The water level was rising due to good rainfall in the city over the last one week and release of water by Haryana.
