Australia beat Britain to finish fifth in women’s hockey

Beijing : Australia beat Great Britain 2-0 to secure fifth position in the Olympic women’s hockey tournament Friday.

Madonna Blythe and Hope Muntro scored in each half for the Australians. In an earlier match, South Africa beat New Zealand 4-1 to finish 11th.

China, in their first ever Olympic hockey final, will take on World No. 1 the Netherlands after the bronze medal match pitting Argentina against Germany later in the day.

The Netherlands were going into the final as favourites. In the 2008 Champions Trophy, they beat China 3-0 for third placing while in the Beijing tournament preliminary round they won 1-0.
