The BJP, a staunch supporter of the bill that seeks to reserve a third of legislative seats in India for women, appeared a divided house with some MPs opposing the quota and threatening to vote even against the party's whip. The bill was cleared by the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

By IANS, New Delhi: A 22-year-old woman was allegedly gangraped by three auto rickshaw drivers in Sarai Kale Khan area of southeast Delhi Tuesday night, police said Wednesday. "The victim, a resident of Yamuna Vihar in northeast Delhi, had taken an auto from Civil Lines to her home. There were two other people in the auto rickshaw with the driver," said a senior police officer. "The accused took her to a deserted place where they raped her," the officer added. "The three men have been arrested," the officer said.

17-year-old raped by three men in car

By IANS, New Delhi : Three men in a car dragged a 17-year-old girl into their vehicle and raped her in north Delhi Friday, police said. According to police, the men abducted the girl from outside her JJ Colony home in Shalimar Bagh when she was going to a public toilet nearby. After raping her, the men dumped her in outer Delhi. "They later dumped her in Narela (outer Delhi). The policemen patrolling the area found her on the road and took her to a hospital. Doctors have confirmed sexual assault," said a policeman.

By DPA, Wellington : A 37-year-old New Zealand woman drove her car 13 km with her lover hanging onto the bonnet, before deliberately staging a head-on crash to kill him, a court was told Monday. Cindy Marcia Fairburn denied during trial in the New Plymouth district court having murdered Darren Paul Maxwell, 42, in August by crashing into an oncoming sports utility vehicle the driver of which was seriously injured in the incident.

Court orders Permanent Commission for women in army, air force

By IANS, New Delhi : The Delhi High Court Friday ordered the grant of Permanent Commission in the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force (IAF) to over 50 women officers who had accused the government of discrimination vis-a-vis their male counterparts. A division bench of Justices S.K. Kaul and M.P. Garg also ordered the reinstatement of all Short Service Commission women officers who retired and approached the court seeking Permanent Commission in the forces.

Woman among four killed in Kashmir gun battle

By IANS, Jammu : A woman, two security personnel and a militant were killed in a gun battle in Jammu and Kashmir Sunday, police said. A group of three militants ambushed a security patrol party in the Kashtigarh forest belt of Doda district in the morning. A policeman and an army trooper were killed in the attack. A fierce encounter broke out in the forest belt following a joint search operation by the police and the army. One of the militants was gunned down but two managed to escape, the police said.

BJP a divided house over women’s bill

Adityanath, who represents Gorakhpur in the lower house, openly rebelled against the bill that seeks to reserve a third of all seats in the country's legislatures for women.
