Domestic violence kills 10 women a day in Brazil

By IANS, Washington: Every day, at least 10 women are killed in domestic violence in Brazil, a government report said. The government-sponsored study, "Map of Violence 2010", found that 41,532 women were murdered in Brazil between 1997 and 2007. But it takes a high-profile incident - the case against a Brazilian footballer who is the prime suspect in the disappearance and murder of his former girlfriend - to bring attention to the problem, Women's Affairs Minister Nilcea Freire was quoted as saying by CNN.

Court asks doctors to decide on abortion for rape victim

By IANS, Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court Tuesday ordered the setting up of a special committee of doctors to decide on terminating the pregnancy of a 19-year-old mentally challenged rape victim as she does not have a guardian. Justice Surya Kant directed the Chandigarh administration to form a committee comprising senior doctors of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and an additional sessions judge, who will act as a member-cum-coordinator. The committee will submit its report within 10 days of its constitution, the court said.

NGOs want protection of men in sexual harassment bill

By IANS, New Delhi: A group of NGOs working for men's rights Saturday demanded that the bill on prevention of sexual harassment of women at the workplace be made gender neutral to also protect men being harassed at the workplace. The NGOs under the banner of Save Indian Family Foundation said the draft bill, which is likely to be introduced in the monsoon session of parliament starting July 26, should be discarded and a fresh gender neutral draft should be prepared.
