Aligarh Movement: Past, present, and future

Cambridge, Massachusetts: Aligarh movement was led by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan to bring Indian Muslims closer to modern and scientific education. Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is one of the fruit of that movement. What has been the contribution of Aligarh movement and AMU to India in general and Muslims in particular? 135 years later where is Aligarh movement headed?
A program was organized past Saturday on January 15, 2011 in Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to discuss the Aligarh movement.

Three people furthering the cause of Aligarh movement in their own ways discussed the significance and importance of Aligarh movement and its future.

Ali Rizvi, President of Federation of Aligarh Alumni Associations (http://www.aligs.org/) and member of AMU Alumni Advisory Committee that recommended setting up AMU branches in different states.

Shaheer Khan, founder and co-moderator of AMUNetwork (http://www.yahoogroups.com/list/amunetwork), a mailing list of over 7500 AMU alumni. Shaheer Khan is also in the board of directors of the Aligarh Education Endowment Fund (AEEF) which supports many education projects in India (http://aeef.net).

Azim Khan Sherwani, Chairperson of Taleemi Caravan (http://www.taleemicaravan.org/), a people’s movement in the district of Bahraich (UP) to raise awareness about education.
