“There have been instances of students being subjected to physical punishment in schools in Rajasthan in the recent past. These acts are deplorable,” state Education Minister Ghanshyam Tiwari told IANS.

“We felt a need to provide these students with some sort of protection and decided on issuing this directive,” he said.

Besides the ban on physical punishment, the state government has also asked school administrations to keep a complaint box in every school. The educational institutions have also been directed to hold parent-teacher meetings once every month.

Parents in the state have welcomed the step.

“Physical punishment to school kids was completely wrong. The education department has taken a right step by prohibiting it completely,” said Om Prakash Sharma who has a seven-year-old daughter.

Chandra Vyas, the mother of a 15-year-old boy, said: “I think this step would help in increasing the attendance of students in schools. In some cases children were not ready to go to school fearing harsh punishment by teachers.”
