The strike has been called in support of their seven-point charter of demands, including improvement of law and order situation in the state, removal of anomalies in the Value Added Tax (VAT), announcement of an industrial policy and a rehabilitation and resettlement policy and withholding the proposed Agriculture Produce Market Committee (Amendment) Bill, 2007.

A meeting of the Jharkhand Rajya Vyapaar Udyog Mahasammelan organised by the Federation of Jharkhand Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FJCCI), which concluded Monday, decided to give the strike call.

“Besides the strike, the traders will also stage a demonstration in front of the state assembly. We will also submit a memorandum to Governor Syed Sibte Razi on Aug 17,” said Arun Budhia, president of FJCCI.

The traders have also expressed concern over the “worsening law and order situation” in the state. In July, a businessman was abducted from Jamshedpur and another was shot at in Ranchi.

“The state government should ensure security of businessmen and create a conducive atmosphere in the state,” said Budhia.

Jharkhand traders have decided to boycott social functions of politicians and not to invite them to any programme to protest the “rising crime graph” in the state.
