Srinagar : Police arrested a resident of Uttar Pradesh and recovered 2 Kilograms of Charas from his possession in Handwara area on Sunday.
According to SP Handwara, Dr. Haseeb Mughal, specific inputs were received regarding smuggling of a drug consignment from Sopore to Kupwara area.
Based on the inputs, he said, a special patrol party was deputed today from Police Post Chogal to Pohrupeth Bus Stop headed by SHO Chowgal S.I Khursheed Ahmad.
He said that the Police party monitored suspicious movement of a person on the Bus stop who was carrying a polythene bag and tried to escape on seeing the police party.
The suspect was apprehended and his search was carried out in presence of SDO Handwara. Two Kilograms of Charas was recovered from his possession, he added.
Identified as Muhammad Alam Malik son of Abdul Malik resident of Gutibagh Tehsil Muradabad Utter Pradesh, the accused was working at Tikker Kupwara , He said that the charas was concealed in the maize-cobs and was scheduled to be smuggled to Kupwara-Handwara.
SP Handwara said that further questioning of the subject is on to ascertain nexus of the subject and further arrests and recoveries in the matter are expected.
He said that a case FIR No. 180/07, under section 8/20 NDPS has been registered in Police Station Handwara in this regard and investigations have been taken up.
