Chandigarh : The ruling Akali Dal in Punjab, an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Tuesday supported the naming of L.K. Advani as the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, saying it signalled the “beginning of the end of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA)” government in New Delhi.
Akali Dal acting president Sukhbir Badal said Advani was the “right choice at this historic juncture as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is poised to replace the UPA” at the Centre in the forthcoming general elections.
“Advani is the only leader at this juncture who can lead the country out of the mess and confusion created by the disparate Congress-Left conglomerate,” Badal said in a statement here.
The Akali Dal claims to be the oldest and “most dependable” ally of the BJP. Both parties have shared power in Punjab and fought elections collectively for over three decades.
